Data-Driven Fintech
Financial Services have always been the domain of real-time processing of huge amounts of data. Being a highly regulated market, the industry boasts some of the highest security standards. Join this session to learn how financial services organizations, like banks, payment services providers, or trading firms, transform into fintech organizations. By leveraging cloud technology, fintech organizations take their performance to the highest level whilst maintaining compliance and security standards.
Intended Audience
This event is perfect for team leads, product managers, IT directors, engineering managers and other professionals working for Finance organizations that are interested to learn more about the potential value of cloud technology for their business.
Topic 1: Data-Driven Banking
Speaker: Wiljo van Beek, Principal Architect Financial Services Google
Shifting customer expectations, regulatory developments, anti-money laundering programs, and a changing competitive landscape requires banks to transform their business. Technology offers an opportunity to accelerate disruption. In this presentation, you will hear how banks and other financial institutions (like fintech start-ups/scale-ups) can use data and analytics technologies to reimagine customer relationships, help transform data into revenue and help drive operational improvements within core systems.
The Changed Attitude of Customers
Customers are looking for more personalized advice, and for seamless higher-quality experiences, with less tolerance for broken systems and processes. An optimized customer experience is a differentiator, and technology plays a central role in enabling that.
Risk Mitigation and Regulatory Compliance
Risk exposure is increasing on a regular basis, with insurers continuing to be top targets for hackers and thieves. Fraud and scams are on the rise too as criminals become more and more sophisticated in their methods. The cost of these risks is mounting. So too are the costs of regulatory compliance – and even though some regulations seem to be lightening, the cost of compliance is still a significant burden.
Accelerating Change Through Technology
However, inflexible, expensive legacy infrastructure prevents rapid change, e.g. data remains in silos and is difficult to use effectively. And then there’s the pressure from FinTech companies. Annual investments in FinTech start-ups have- increased 5x over the past three years, and 90% of banks fear they will lose business to a start-up as an investment in FinTech grows. There are three key ways data and analytics cloud services help transform the banks for the future:
- Reimagine customer relationships
- Help transform data into revenue
- Help drive operational improvements within core systems

Topic 2: High-Frequency Data Processing
Speaker: Diederik Greveling, ML Engineer GoDataDriven
High-frequency trading firms need to handle fast amounts of data to allow their analysts to run complex analysis jobs in a short amount of time. In this session, Diederik Greveling will share his experiences of implementing cloud-based scalable infrastructures for high-frequency trading. You will learn about the agile approach to deploy infrastructure, how to seamlessly integrate cloud infrastructure with the on-prem stack, and security best practices. Besides the technical challenges, Diederik will also highlight organizational requirements and share lessons learned.
What You’ll Learn
After this session, you know what results to expect from specific applications of cloud technology and which GCP services are available to turn this ambition into reality.
- Store large amounts of data on GCP using Google Cloud Storage and Bigquery
- Leverage Dataproc to perform complex analysis in a distributed manner
- Establish a messaging layer using Confluence Cloud
- Orchestrate jobs provision multiple interconnects using GCP Composer
- Provision infrastructure-as-code using Terraform
